Since San Diego imports more than 85 percent of its water it is very important to conserve every precious drop. As part of a region-wide effort to encourage voluntary water conservation, the City of San Diego Water Department, together with the San Diego County Water Authority has launched the 20-Gallon Challenge. San Diegans are each being asked to conserve 20-gallons of water a day to contribute to the water conservation effort.
Simple ways to save when doing house cleaning or yard cleaning are to remember not to leave the faucet or hose running while you clean and use a broom rather than water for cleaning debris off drives and walkways. You can save 2.5 gallonsper minute by turning off the faucet while you clean your teeth and 1.6 gallons per flush when you avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket.
