SustainLane's 2006 US City Rankings ranked the 50 largest US cities by sustainability factors. Houston came in at #39 which is an improvement over 2005 when the city ranked last. Part of the reason why Houston ranks quite low is that they have not had anyone responsible for managing or communicating the city's sustainability performance. Mayor Bill White has now appointed A Director of Environmental Programming to work across the city's departments and make positive steps towards a more sustainable future.
